बस में बहुत भीड़ थी। अपनी सीट पर मज़े से बैठा मैं गर्व का अनुभव कर रहा था। मेरी सीट की पुश्त से दोनों हाथ टिकाये एक बूढ़ा व्यक्ति बार-बार लोगों से धक्के खाता हुआ लड़खड़ा रहा था। उसने मेरी तरफ़ दयनीय दृष्टि से देखा, पर मैं उसे अनदेखा कर दूसरी तरफ़ झांकने लगा।
तभी अगले स्टॉप पर एक सुंदर युवती बस में चढ़ी। उसने जगह की तलाश में इधर-उधर नज़रें फिराई। जैसे ही उसकी नज़र मुझ पर पड़ी, मैं मुस्कुराकर अपनी सीट से उठ खड़ा हुआ।
“थैंक्स” उसने कहा और मेरी छोड़ी जगह पर बैठ गई। तभी उसकी निगाह लड़खड़ाते बूढ़े पर पड़ी।
“आइए बाबा, आप यहां बैठ जाइए।” कहते हुए वह भी उठ खड़ी हुई।
“जीती रहो बेटी। भगवान् तुम्हारा भला करे।” वृद्ध राहत का अनुभव करते हुए वहां बैठ गया। मैं फ़ौरन भीड़ में जगह बनाते हुए आगे बढ़ गया क्योंकि इस बार बूढ़े व्यक्ति की नज़रों का सामना करने का साहस मुझमें नहीं था।
